My petals,

During a recent investigation (also for fun) I came across the following web page:

http://onehugeeye.com/

It would seem that an admiring citizen has immortalised me by transforming my investigatorial persona into a character in some form of peculiar online comic strip. There are many differences but the name Hugh is still original as is the fact that I am incredibly and impressively wise.

It is a nice site all round, worth a look.

Nice to know I have fans with such talent.

Farewell.

Dear Hugh,

I always wondered why firemen are called that, since is not fire they carry but water. They could be called watermen or splash people... or even wet dudes.

Best Regards,

Mr Dry Dude,

Welcome to Hugh Evans Investigates. Always am I keen to hear from new people, especially when their questions are as poignant as yours is.

I often begin my enquiries by tracking down a definition of the problem at hand. In your case, there are two definitions of the word Firemen:

1) Crewmen who had the job of keeping steam in the engines by shoveling coal into the boilers or furnaces.
www.webtitanic.net/frameterms.html

2) A firefighter is a person who is trained and equipped to put out fires, rescue people, and in some areas provide emergency medical services. The fire service, also known in some countries as the fire brigade or fire department, is one of the emergency services. Firefighters are sometimes referred to as firemen, although women have increasingly joined firefighting units

It would seem to me that your point here that firemen should be more associated with the creation of fire and not in the destruction of it is backed up by the first definition. The second definition is much more referring to the title 'Firefighter'.

To me though, Firefighter is also not a clear title fo these brave people. It makes them sound far too sinister - almost as if all they do all day is fight each other with fire.

So what would be better?...
Watermen, splash people, wet dudes. All fine suggestions in principle but the solutions are self-defeating.

Let me explain:

Watermen - could be men made of water, of the direction, 'water those men'.

Wet dudes - too many surfing and drugs connotations. Not to mention some potentially unsavoury associations of a sexual nature.

Splash people - I think there is a gang of hooded youths in my area in North London who go by this name. They drive around in cars splashing innocent pavement dwellers and shouting four letter words that are an investigation waiting to happen all on their own. Definitely a group of people who would sooner start a fire than extinguish one.

My proposal is this. Be away with the term Fireman or Firefighter - perhaps brandish it 'politically incorrect' - that usually works and no-one questions why. Then suggest one of the following replacement names:

POOF - (Putter Outers Of Fires)
ARSE - Arrangers of Real Serious Extinguishing
FART - Flames And Rubble Traffickers

Thank you again for taking the time to tax my otherwise unengaged mind.

I hope to hear from you again next time something this serious is troubling you.
